About Shannon
Shannon Markwell is the Director of Strategic Accounts at SMS Companies in San Diego, California. She has spent 13 years in the construction industry, including two years in her current role selling ground-up and remodel projects. Previously, she worked as a facilities coordinator for Charlotte Ruth and gained experience through her parents' construction company. Markwell earned her bachelor's degree in 2003 and attended medical school before transitioning to the workforce, where she also became a certified personal trainer. Her notable achievement includes being awarded Rookie Contractor of the Year last November in her first year on the construction sales side. She attributes her success to building strong relationships and maintaining integrity, values that also guide her approach to mentoring and leadership in the industry.

01What do you attribute your success to?
It's relationships. It's keeping your integrity within the field that you are working in. And building strong relationships with those people.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Don't ever give up. Keep on going, and don't worry about the no's, you just gotta keep on pushing.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Definitely not easy. You gotta hang on tight... be strong, and build those relationships. Befriend these people in the industry and earn their trust.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenge is getting to the right people. Being able to speak to the right people.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Integrity is huge. Trust. Growth. Continuously learning, improving. Resilience. Stay positive, focused. Leadership - inspiring people, building people's confidence, mentoring.
