Four years ago, she transitioned into Medicare, serving as a captive agent with WellCare, where she guided older adults through important healthcare decisions with compassion and integrity.

When an unexpected layoff could have ended her journey, Shanta chose to create a new path. She founded eMERG Health Benefits Group with a mission to ensure individuals and families—regardless of income—have access to quality healthcare, education, and community resources. 01What do you attribute your success to?

I believe my success comes from listening before leading. Throughout my career, I've learned that people don't just need information—they need someone who will take the time to understand their unique situation, explain their options with honesty, and help them make decisions with confidence. That approach has allowed me to build meaningful relationships and earn the trust of the communities I serve.

I've also never been afraid to start over or embrace change. Every transition in my career has strengthened my ability to adapt, grow, and discover new ways to make a difference. Those experiences ultimately inspired me to found eMERG Health Benefits, where I could focus on educating, advocating for, and empowering individuals as they navigate Medicare, health insurance, and access to essential resources.

What continues to drive me is knowing that a single conversation can change someone's life. Whether I'm helping a senior understand their Medicare benefits, connecting a family to available assistance programs, or educating the community about healthcare options, I measure success by the confidence and peace of mind people gain after working with me.

Above all, I attribute my success to staying authentic, leading with compassion, and remaining committed to lifelong learning. Healthcare is constantly evolving, and I believe the best advocates are those who continue to grow so they can better serve others. If my work leaves people feeling informed, supported, and empowered, then I consider that my greatest achievement.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I've ever received is to never let setbacks define your future. Every challenge, disappointment, or unexpected detour carries a lesson that prepares you for what's next. I've learned that success isn't about avoiding failure—it's about having the courage to keep moving forward despite it.

Maya Angelou once said that we may encounter many defeats, but we must not be defeated. That perspective has stayed with me throughout my career. There have been moments when things didn't go as planned, but each experience strengthened my resilience, clarified my purpose, and reminded me that growth often comes from the hardest seasons.

Today, I approach every opportunity with the understanding that perseverance is one of the greatest investments you can make in yourself. If you remain committed to your purpose, continue learning, and refuse to give up, every setback becomes a stepping stone toward the person you're meant to become.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering the healthcare and insurance industry is to never let what you don't know stop you from pursuing what you want to achieve. Knowledge is one of the greatest assets you can build, and it comes through curiosity, continuous learning, and experience—not by having all the answers on day one.

Don't be afraid to ask questions, seek mentors, or admit when you need to learn something new. Confidence isn't about knowing everything; it's about believing in your ability to grow. Every expert was once a beginner who chose to keep learning.

This industry is built on trust, compassion, and education. The more knowledge you gain, the better equipped you'll be to advocate for others and make a meaningful difference in their lives. Stay teachable, remain resilient, and never underestimate the impact you can have simply by showing up with integrity and a willingness to learn.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in the healthcare and Medicare industry is the constant pace of change. CMS regulations, plan benefits, eligibility requirements, and healthcare policies are continually evolving, requiring professionals to stay informed so they can provide accurate guidance. At the same time, many individuals experience life changes—such as losing Medicaid eligibility, retiring, relocating, or facing new health concerns—that can significantly impact their coverage and benefits.

While these changes can be overwhelming for both professionals and the people we serve, I also believe they create some of the greatest opportunities. Every policy update or life transition is an opportunity to educate, advocate, and help someone make informed decisions that protect their health and financial well-being. That's why I believe staying knowledgeable is essential. The more informed we are, the better equipped we are to turn uncertainty into confidence for those who rely on us.

For me, the greatest opportunity isn't simply keeping up with change—it's using that knowledge to make a meaningful difference in someone's life when they need it most.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that guide both my work and personal life are balance, integrity, compassion, and intentional self-care. I believe that success is most meaningful when it doesn't come at the expense of your health, your relationships, or your peace of mind.

As someone who spends my days advocating for others and helping people navigate important healthcare decisions, I've learned that I can only pour into others if I also make time to pour into myself. Spending quality time with my family, setting aside quiet moments to recharge, and prioritizing wellness through practices like regular massages and self-care allow me to stay grounded and present in every area of my life.

I also value lifelong learning and leading with empathy. Every interaction is an opportunity to make someone feel heard, supported, and empowered. Whether at work or at home, I strive to create a life built on purpose, meaningful relationships, and the understanding that taking care of yourself is not selfish—it's essential to serving others well.
