About Shanta
Shanta Norton serves as Zone Manager in the transportation department, where she has worked for over 25 years. She began her career as a bus driver, a role she held for about 20 years, before a knee injury prompted her to pursue management opportunities. Norton took courses to build computer and office skills, advancing first to transportation assistant and then, within one to two years, to Zone Manager. In her current position, she directs daily transportation operations for over 120 employees, ensures adherence to safety protocols, assists with payroll and scheduling to cover routes, and supports accident investigations by reviewing details and responding to scenes as needed. She collaborates closely with her coordinator and higher management while handling routing, planning, and emergency situations. Norton credits her success primarily to practical experience in the field, consistent learning, and persistence, which became even more focused after losing her sister, inspiring her to enhance safety protocols and develop a pedestrian safety device that she is now working to launch. She advises young women entering the field to remain determined, consistent, diligent, and always willing to learn, noting that the industry is becoming more diverse with greater opportunities for women in management roles.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Shanta
01What do you attribute your success to?
I would say mostly it is the experience. You definitely have to be in the field to know most of the things in transportation. Experience is very much so a teacher. And just consistently learning as much as possible and staying persistent. What led me to be even more consistent is losing our sister, and just trying to improve on more safety protocols in transportation and roadway safety.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Just to be determined. Be determined and consistent. Just don't give up. Be diligent in being consistent. Just make sure you learn as much as possible. You're never too you never know too much. You have to be willing to learn.
03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
There are a lot more opportunities growing in my field right now. We have a lot more opportunities in management and everything that is growing. The field is getting very diverse. It was not very women-friendly at first and it was much more harder for women, Black women as well, to get into the field and become managers. Now you have a better chance of getting in the field.
04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Just to be a good person, and just try to be consistent with your work or your life. Whatever you put out on this earth it always comes back to you, so just try to focus on being a good person.
