Her Story

About Shantrelle

I've been in accounting since around 2014, even though my degrees are in criminal justice administration from University of Phoenix and a master's in business administration earned in 2016. I couldn't find work in criminal justice as a juvenile probation officer due to saturation, so staffing companies led me into accounting starting with receivables then payables. Now at Orlando Health as an analyst handling payments, accruals, journal entries and month-end reconciliations. I've built vendor rapport and saved money with process improvements over my 12-14 years in the field.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to never stopping and never giving up. You're not a failure unless you stop. I worked my way up from coordinator in accounting all the way to analyst, even though my degree didn't directly help me jump into spaces. Just keep going, eventually it'll happen.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I've received is to just keep going. Sometimes you go through trials feeling like you're not good enough or can't get it right, but you have to keep going and never give up. Confidence is key, and sometimes you have to fake it till you make it.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge right now in big corporate businesses is lack of training. They don't have time to hold your hand, so you really have to know what you're doing from day one. They hire you because they believe you can do it, and without experience you'll be lost and likely terminated. It's sink or swim.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The most important value to me is keeping your morals and staying grounded. Sometimes things make you get out of character, but you always have to remember your morals and stay grounded.
