Her Story

About Shaquita

I've been in HR for over 12 years, and my journey started back in college when I would attend career fairs and see employers there - it just seemed like such a fun job and really interested me. I was a business administration major with a concentration in management, but when I took a human resource management class during my junior year, it really intrigued me and further solidified that HR was what I wanted to do. Within HR, recruiting seemed like the most fun aspect and really captured my attention. My first job was in payroll at a private security company for almost two years, and I also did some HR administrative assistant work there. But the majority of my career has been in talent acquisition, mostly campus recruiting, which has been my main focus. I've done diversity recruitment, high-volume recruiting, and experienced hire recruiting along the way. Currently, I'm a university recruiter at KPMG, where I manage a portfolio of schools and am responsible for building relationships with external stakeholders like professors, deans, and career services departments, as well as internal stakeholders like my school recruiting leads. I engage with students through campus activities such as career fairs, classroom visits, student organizations, and other events. I'm particularly proud of being able to expand relationships with HBCUs here at KPMG - I attended an HBCU in undergrad, so it's something I'm passionate about, and being able to connect with those students as they navigate corporate America and the job search process means everything to me.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I'd say perseverance. Being where I'm from, a small town, I didn't see this as a career - nobody came and talked to me about HR. Even the path of moving from Arkansas to St. Louis and then Dallas, it may not have seemed easy, and I wasn't seeing other people around me do it, but that didn't mean I couldn't do it myself. I've always been ambitious and a high achiever and determined, and when I make up my mind to do something, I'm gonna do it. Even if I don't know how, even if I have to figure out how to get it done. Perseverance has really gotten me through to keep going - to get the master's degree, to get the certification, and all of those things.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say my advice would be to keep the human in human resources. You know, HR has a reputation, but I would say you get to decide how you show up. I remember learning in a Principles of Management class that people are an organization's most valuable resource, and I take that to heart and truly believe it. I believe how you treat people matters, so I believe it's important to be able to lead with empathy, integrity, and respect, and that really sets the tone for relationships that you build. That's how I try to build relationships with everyone that I meet.
