What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to being driven by motivation and spirituality - being in tune with myself and my clients. What really keeps me going is seeing their progress and watching them make the changes in their lives that they need to have a well-lived, balanced life. Once I see that transformation happening, it gives me even more drive to develop new programs and implement new things to help and assist people. I genuinely love helping others, and that passion is what fuels everything I do in my practice.
What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I ever received came from a supervisor some years ago, and even though it was so simple, it was incredibly impactful. She told me that in this field, especially with social work and psychotherapy, we just move and keep going so fast, but there is a solution to almost anything. She said I didn't have to over-exert myself and that we could just take it one thing at a time. It was such a simple message, but it really shifted the way I practice going forward. It helped me make sure that I'm present and focusing on one thing at a time, because there is a solution.
What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would definitely tell them to take it slow and focus on one thing at a time. It's so important that they try not to lose themselves, because I know this field can be very demanding and sometimes stressful. Finding good mentors is crucial, and they need to be very verbal about what they're feeling or experiencing. I want them to know that there's so much support in this field - from other social workers, therapists, and people in the mental health field. They should speak out and reach out for that support, because it's there for them.
What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenge I see is not reaching the elder population as much as we should. I know the geriatric population really needs mental health support too, and hopefully we can get more and more access to them, which we're trying to push for. As far as opportunities, there are so many. There's a lot of opportunity for growth, and I feel like we're needed in so many spaces to provide support, resources, and skills. With everything going on in society today, I feel like mental health support is being diminished a little, so there's tremendous opportunity to really provide support to so many different communities.
What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
In both my work and personal life, I value putting family first and prioritizing health and wellness all the time. Family time is incredibly important to me. In my practice, it's so important to help my clients feel centered and that they're heard. That's the biggest thing for me - making sure people feel truly listened to and supported. I also believe strongly in self-care, because the work we do is so demanding and intense, especially dealing with mental health and different issues. So I make time for things like going to spas, spending time with friends and family, or just having alone time watching good documentaries or movies for relaxation.
