Ten minutes with Sharmeen
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to resilience, authenticity, and a willingness to keep showing up regardless of the challenges I face. Throughout my life, I have learned that setbacks are not permanent unless we allow them to be. Whether overcoming personal adversity, raising two children as a single mother, or building a new career after decades in social work, I have consistently relied on perseverance and faith in the process.
My experiences working with patients at MD Anderson Cancer Center taught me invaluable lessons about survival, courage, and the strength of the human spirit. Those lessons, combined with my own personal journey through an abusive relationship, deepened my empathy and strengthened my commitment to helping others heal and grow.
I have also learned the importance of patience, self-awareness, and trusting divine timing. Success has come from being true to myself, listening to my inner wisdom, embracing continuous learning, and using my life experiences to support and empower others on their own journeys.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The most impactful career advice I have ever received is simple: be true to yourself and fully embrace who you are. Authenticity is one of the most powerful qualities a person can possess because people naturally connect with genuine individuals and can often sense when someone is trying to be something they are not.
Throughout my journey, I have learned that success does not come from fitting in or following someone else's expectations. It comes from honoring your unique gifts, trusting your instincts, and allowing yourself to take up space without apology. My personal motto, "Free to Be Me," reflects this philosophy and serves as a reminder to live authentically every day.
I have also been encouraged by mentors and coaches to stop minimizing myself and to confidently share my voice. When we fully embrace who we are, we create opportunities to make a meaningful impact while experiencing greater fulfillment and joy.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women is to slow down and create space to listen to your own inner wisdom. In today's world, there is often pressure to constantly achieve, hustle, and keep up with everyone around us. However, true clarity and purpose emerge when we take time to reflect and connect with ourselves.
I encourage women to be authentic, take up space, and stop minimizing their contributions. Learn to trust your voice, honor your unique perspective, and recognize that your experiences have value. Equally important is learning to receive support, guidance, and encouragement from others rather than feeling that you must do everything alone.
I also believe that collaboration is far more powerful than competition. Build meaningful relationships, support other women, and focus on creating reciprocal connections. Most importantly, pursue what genuinely brings you fulfillment rather than what others expect from you. Your greatest success will come when you align your work and life with your authentic self.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the greatest challenges facing women today is the amount of unresolved pain, trauma, and self-doubt that many carry throughout their lives. These experiences often prevent women from fully recognizing their strengths, pursuing opportunities, and embracing their potential.
At the same time, I believe there is an extraordinary opportunity emerging through collaboration and community. Women are increasingly coming together to support one another, share resources, build businesses, and create pathways toward financial independence and personal empowerment. Movements such as Sheconomy demonstrate the incredible impact that can occur when women work collectively toward common goals.
I see tremendous potential in helping women release limiting beliefs, heal from past experiences, and rediscover their gifts. When women are empowered, they positively influence their families, communities, and future generations, creating lasting and meaningful change.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Authenticity is the foundation of everything I do. I believe in being true to myself and creating spaces where others feel safe to do the same. Genuine connection and meaningful relationships can only develop when people feel seen, heard, and accepted for who they are.
Another value that guides my life is presence. I strive to be fully present with those I serve, offering compassion, understanding, and support without judgment or expectation. Some of the most transformative moments in life occur when someone feels truly understood, and I consider that one of the greatest gifts we can offer one another.
I also value service, lifelong learning, resilience, and interdependence. I believe in helping others from a place of love and purpose, continually growing both personally and professionally, and fostering relationships built on mutual support and respect. Ultimately, I strive to live a life of meaning, contribution, and authentic happiness.
