Her Story
About Sharon
I've been in my field for over 20 years, working in law enforcement at the prosecutor's office and in healthcare before starting my own business with my husband. We run a visibility strategy firm that helps small businesses get visibility and position them in the right spaces, in front of the right people. We use media, digital photography and video to get crystal clear pictures and videos, and we use community and government connections to find different ways to position clients and get them into spaces so they can build their business. The industry has changed a lot over 20 years - PR has evolved from just the media part to storytelling, social media, relationships and relatability. We've had to regroup many times to fit with what the industry and economy are going through. Our clients range from entrepreneurs to small businesses to larger companies, but our sweet spot is entrepreneurs and smaller businesses because we know they don't have the bandwidth as their larger competitors. Both my husband and I have worked in larger competitors' industries, so we know what the media looks for, what the community looks for, what the government looks for, and we bring that knowledge to small business owners. My proudest moments are when we get clients featured on their ideal media platform or in front of their ideal client - that one big success they're looking for. The look on their face when I let them know we're preparing to get into that space is incredible. We work hard to make sure everything looks crystal clear, they sound great, look great, and feel great, because once they've been in that location, it's one time that you can mess it up.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Get a mentor. Definitely get a mentor. You can't do this by yourself. You definitely need to have somebody that you look up to, but a mentor definitely will lead you in the right direction. And once you get that mentor, you then get a coach. Those two go hand in hand, because your finance person, your marketing person, all of them are experts in terms of they know what to do, but to really understand how to run a business, you want to make sure that you get somebody in there that can literally teach you how to run your business properly. So your coach, your mentor, and just read as much as you can about business. Just read as much as you can. And you need faith. You definitely need faith.
