Her Story
About Sharon
Sharon Wilson has dedicated her career to education in rural Kentucky. She began as an extension 4-H agent for nine years before teaching language arts for 34 years in Nicholas County, where she connected with nearly every student and family in the small community of about 7,500 people. Now in her first term on the local school board and running unopposed for reelection, Wilson continues to support students and families through community events and celebrations. She serves as president of the Red Hat Society, contributes to DAR exhibits at the local museum, volunteers extensively with her church and at the nursing home, and sings gospel music weekly. Wilson advises those entering education to be themselves with children, love them, get to know each child, and focus on their strengths.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Be yourself with the children and love the children. If you don't love children, you don't need to be in education anyway. Try to get to know each child. Know their strengths and stay on their strengths as much as you possibly can.
