Her Story
About Shauney
I've been working in the entertainment industry for 35-40 years as a touring musician, producer, speaker, and entrepreneur. Throughout my career, I've toured with major artists including Hilary Duff and the Pussycat Dolls, and I was a drummer in a house band on a television show, which I consider one of my most notable professional achievements along with the opportunity to do a number of shows with Sting. As a producer, I create concerts and help put together the production when I'm on tour with artists. I'm also an author - I wrote 'The Female Musician's Guide,' a book about navigating the male-dominated music industry while managing life as a woman, becoming a wife and mother figure, and maintaining a career. I was inspired to write this book after touring with many male musicians and realizing I was underrepresented and that there wasn't someone there who represented my needs or what I was experiencing. As a speaker, I give talks at schools and universities about my career and the entertainment industry, and now I also speak about topics from my book including navigating the industry, managing finances, and balancing it all. I have my own brand and products, and I'm actively involved in my Hollywood Hills community, serving on the board and on a development team for the community surrounding the Hollywood Bowl and Universal area.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Shauney
01What do you attribute your success to?
I would say my foundation; family and what I was taught, education, access and being in the right place at the right time.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best advice I’ve been given is to save your money.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would tell her to gather as much information as she can and to gain as much knowledge and pay attention. In terms of knowledge, I mean pay attention to things like finances and the economy, because when you're in entertainment and you're making money, you need to learn to save money or manage money well. That's definitely important. And then, just start their steps to this. You know, it's a process, so I would just kind of give her or him a blueprint, a guideline to what those steps are. And to, you know, stay humble, of course.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
There seems to never be enough time.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
I think it's important to be involved in your community and take responsibility for your community. I was raised that it's important to be involved in your community. I also understand the desire to help people, which comes from my initial pre-med studies. I've also learned that managing people well is definitely a gift, and I didn't realize I had that until it was brought to my attention from a project I was working with Disney. Staying humble is also important to me.
