Her Interview

Ten minutes with ShaVonda

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to the values of education, lifelong learning, and staying true to my purpose. My family instilled in me from an early age that education is the foundation for creating opportunities and making a meaningful impact, and that belief has guided every step of my career. As the Director of Career Exploration and Professional Learning, I strive to help students discover not only their career paths but also their potential by taking a holistic approach that develops them academically, professionally, and personally. My greatest source of pride is my role as a mother, watching my three children embrace the values of resilience, compassion, and service to others. I also believe growth comes from being willing to continually learn, unlearn, and adapt. By remaining open to new perspectives, I can better connect with and empower the next generation. Above all, I believe that confidence, clarity of purpose, and a commitment to continuous learning are the keys to lasting success, because we all have something to teach, and we all have something to learn.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I have received is, "We do not panick, we pivot."

Hold yourself accountable.

Do not shrink for no one.

There are always teachable moments to learn from.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering this industry is to never doubt yourself. Knowing who you are is the foundation for building a successful and fulfilling career because it gives you the confidence to navigate challenges, seize opportunities, and lead with authenticity. Gain clarity about your purpose early, set meaningful goals, develop a clear path to achieve them, and remain focused on your vision. There will be obstacles along the way, seeds of doubt planted by others or yourself, but if you stay committed, continue learning, and believe in your abilities, you will achieve the success you envision. Trust yourself, stay true to your values, and never underestimate your potential to make a meaningful impact.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The opportunities in my field right now are connecting students early on to their career pathway. Helping students see the value of how their academics, career, and personal pathways connect for their success.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me in my work and personal life are God, my core values, family, and being the best version of myself. Knowing if I approach each day with grace, purpose, grit and tenacity, I do not fail. I simply tap into my inner being and ascend to my purpose. There are non-negotiables which keep me grounded in who I am and my purpose.
