Her Interview
Ten minutes with Shavonda
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to hard work, perseverance, determination, and believing in myself. Throughout my journey, I have learned that dedication and resilience can help overcome challenges and create opportunities, regardless of where you start. Rising from limited resources has taught me the value of persistence, discipline, and staying committed to my goals. By continuing to push forward, embracing growth, and trusting in my abilities, I have been able to build a successful career and achieve milestones that once seemed out of reach.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I have ever received was to be open to exploring new opportunities, even when they may be outside of my comfort zone. A recruiter encouraged me to consider a career in insurance and shared that it was a field where women could make a significant impact, especially in a traditionally male-dominated industry. I was encouraged to simply give it a chance and see the possibilities for myself. Taking that step allowed me to discover a rewarding career path where I could leverage my skills, build meaningful relationships, and continue growing professionally.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering the industry is to believe in themselves, embrace their capabilities, and pursue their goals with confidence. There are no limits to what you can achieve when you are willing to challenge expectations, step outside of your comfort zone, and recognize your own potential. Do not allow outdated perceptions of what women can or should do define your path. Create space for yourself, trust your abilities, continue learning, and confidently pursue the opportunities that align with your passions and ambitions. You have the power to build a successful career and make a meaningful impact in any field you choose.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in the insurance industry is addressing the gender imbalance and ensuring that women have equal opportunities to be recognized for their expertise, leadership, and client relationships. Historically, women have often been the ones behind the scenes servicing and expanding accounts, while men received more visibility in client-facing roles. However, this also creates a significant opportunity to bring more women into the industry, highlight the stability and flexibility that insurance careers can offer, and create pathways for women to take ownership of client relationships and leadership opportunities. By empowering more women to step forward, the industry can benefit from diverse perspectives, stronger connections, and a more inclusive future.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that are most important to me in both my work and personal life are family, flexibility, hard work, resilience, and empowerment. I believe in being present for the people who matter most while also building a career that allows me to grow and make an impact. Hard work and perseverance have guided me throughout my journey, helping me overcome challenges and continue moving forward. I am also passionate about empowering and representing women, encouraging them to pursue opportunities, recognize their strengths, and know that they have the ability to succeed in any field they choose.
