Her Story
About Shavonna
I handle complex commercial claims with cargo at GEICO. Anytime loads of bananas or cars are being hauled across country and something gets damaged, those are the claims I handle. My day-to-day is all about customer service and helping people through hard situations. If they're talking to me, they've had something bad happen - an accident or something has transpired with their vehicle or cargo. Someone wants to be paid, so I gather the facts, investigate the claim, and figure out what took place so I can try to recreate the situation and scenario as if I was there. I determine what the insurance company owes for, what we're liable for, and how we can rectify the situation and make people whole again. My goal for the next 5 years is to be training and educating people. I want to change the stigma of insurance because everyone thinks insurance companies are just looking to stiff you over once it's time to cash in. I want people to be educated and understand their policies, know what they're covered for, and whether they need more or less coverage. I want to be a resource for people at GEICO who want to learn how to get licensed to work claims or just learn about the industry. My goal is to learn something, execute it, and then teach it to someone else.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Based off my experience so far, I would share that you need to take the step. It may seem far away, but invest in yourself. Always invest in yourself. Even if you can't find a company like State Farm that will pay for your license, if you want to do it, sometimes you have to put the first investment into yourself. I know it's a cliche, but I feel like you can do anything that you put your mind to and want to do. I'm a mother of two, and I still continue to go to school and work full-time, so I feel like you can really do anything that you put your mind to. And always just be kind. Make sure that anybody you meet, you want to be kind to, because you never know when you're gonna meet them again.
02What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
My personal values is faith first. Wherever I go, I'm gonna pray, and I'll also thank my Jesus in advance, and Lord, Christ savior in advance for everything. He also is my salvation, my provider and my protector, so I don't give myself credit for any role that I have earned or anything, as I give it all to the glory of God. So my faith first, and then my family.
