Currently serving as Director of Regulatory Compliance at Kestra Financial, she has built a distinguished career spanning virtually every area of compliance, including branch examinations, internal audits, customer complaint resolution, transaction surveillance, regulatory examinations, and conflicts-of-interest oversight. Throughout her career, Shawn has worked closely with the SEC, FINRA, and state regulators while advising executives and leadership teams on sensitive compliance and risk-management matters. Her expertise is strengthened by a Doctorate of Management in Organizational Leadership and her Certified Fraud Examiner credential.

Known for her “Human Edge” philosophy, Shawn brings a people-centered approach to regulatory compliance by integrating behavioral insight, ethical leadership, and organizational psychology into traditional compliance frameworks. She believes that the greatest risks organizations face are often rooted not in systems or policies, but in human behavior, communication gaps, and workplace culture. Through her leadership, mentoring, and speaking engagements, Shawn advocates for transforming compliance departments from rigid “check-the-box” functions into strategic, integrity-driven environments where accountability and dignity coexist. Her work emphasizes that trust, empathy, and authentic leadership are operational strengths in today’s evolving AI-driven business landscape.

In addition to her corporate leadership, Shawn is an active industry speaker, mentor, and thought leader who regularly participates in professional panels and continuing education events focused on ethics, compliance, and financial services regulation. She is a member of the National Society of Compliance Professionals, the Financial Services Institute, and the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. Passionate about developing the next generation of professionals, Shawn encourages others—especially women entering the field—to embrace curiosity, adaptability, and lifelong learning. Her career reflects a commitment not only to regulatory excellence, but also to preserving the human connection at the heart of leadership and compliance.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Shawn

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to patience, kindness, and the ability to truly listen to people before reacting or making assumptions. My mother taught me the importance of treating others with grace, even in difficult situations, and that mindset has guided me throughout my career. I believe remaining calm, approachable, and thoughtful allows me to resolve issues effectively while building trust and strong professional relationships. I have also learned the value of persistence and adaptability, which helped me thrive in an industry that constantly evolves.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I ever received was: “Be the water. Just go with the flow. Don’t let anything stop you. Keep flowing.” That advice taught me the importance of adaptability, resilience, and remaining open to change. In compliance and financial services, regulations, technologies, and business environments are constantly shifting, so being flexible while staying grounded in integrity has been essential to my success.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would encourage young women to seriously consider compliance as a meaningful and rewarding career path. It is an industry where curiosity, attention to detail, critical thinking, and emotional intelligence truly matter. I believe women often bring strong investigative instincts, communication skills, and empathy into this work, which are incredibly valuable in compliance and leadership roles.

I also encourage the next generation to embrace change rather than fear it, especially with the rapid evolution of AI and technology. Technology will continue to transform our industry, but human relationships, ethical judgment, and trust will always remain essential. Build strong relationships, stay curious, continue learning, and never underestimate the value of the human element in business.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in the compliance industry today is navigating the rapid evolution of technology and artificial intelligence while maintaining the human side of leadership and ethics. Regulatory scrutiny continues to increase, and organizations are facing more sophisticated fraud risks, scams, and operational complexities than ever before.

At the same time, these changes create tremendous opportunities. I believe there is a growing need for compliance professionals who can bridge the gap between regulatory expectations and human behavior. There is also an opportunity to mentor the next generation of professionals, strengthen ethical cultures, and help organizations recognize that people—not just systems—are what truly distinguish successful businesses.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that matter most to me are patience, kindness, integrity, listening, and strong interpersonal relationships. I believe people deserve to be treated with dignity and respect, even during difficult conversations or regulatory situations. I value empathy and understanding because they create trust and better outcomes in both professional and personal settings.

I also believe in maintaining authenticity, being dependable, and approaching challenges with a calm and solutions-oriented mindset. For me, leadership is not about ego—it is about helping people navigate complexity while preserving accountability and humanity at the same time.
