Her Story
About Shawna
I have been in the project management industry for well over 20 years, and it has been a very enlightening journey. I have grown as a person, as a professional, as a teacher, and mentor. I spent over 20 years in healthcare IT, managing very complex, very high-profile technology projects in the healthcare space, as well as pharmaceutical and biotech. I retired from my corporate job last month and am now somewhat semi-retired. Currently, I am refining my research proposal for my PhD application to relocate to Ireland and finish a PhD in Project Management, with a focus on emotional intelligence in complex project environments. I am also working with my publisher on my second book. I am proud to have been a draft review contributor for the Project Management Body of Knowledge 8th edition, so my name ended up in that professional book as well. Most recently, one of my highlights has been co-founding the Project Management Institute student club at the University of Arkansas Little Rock, and I am starting to get engaged with other PMI chapters globally who are interested in setting up similar student clubs at their universities for students who are interested in project management.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Shawna
01What do you attribute your success to?
God. And a willing, humble spirit. Willing to adapt, to pivot in life wherever God leads. You know, you make your plans, and you think you got great plans, but thank God has other plans. I have to be willing to pivot and adapt. My faith in God is number one. It's my number one go-to, and I'm just full of gratitude and praise. And no matter what I go through, whether it's success or whether it's a lesson, all glory and praise goes to my God. Absolutely.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I think is about emotional intelligence, having that skill set and applying it effectively, which is something that you just kind of iteratively mature into, kind of grow into. And for me, for anyone who's a Christian who's faithful, it really does correlate to the good fruit of the Spirit found in Galatians 5. So when you have that, and you have your faith as the foundation, and that excellent spirit, again, that you receive from God, and you apply that, everything else just comes together.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Women, you know what? I believe we have an innate talent that God gives us as women to naturally grow and mature in emotional intelligence. And when you really study that deeply, correlate that with the fruit of the Spirit, women just... it comes natural to us. It's a lot easier for us to incorporate that into our professional and personal lives. So, that's some of the biggest advice I can give to women, is just really embrace what God gives us naturally, the talents, because it's so valuable in every context, in every industry, in every role that you have everywhere. It just really, really, really helps you and others around you.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
In today's day and age, the speed at which technology is morphing and evolving, we have to be adaptable. We have to look at what technologies are coming up that not just present opportunities, but could also be threats if you're not willing to pivot, if you're not willing to upskill. One of them, in particular, is artificial intelligence. It's not going away, and the technology is evolving so quickly, so fast. The research studies, they're barely keeping up. In fact, in some aspects, they're not keeping up. They're falling behind. So, I highly recommend anyone who's in project management, program management, portfolio management, any kind of corporate industry, really, you've got to upskill in artificial intelligence, learn the tools, learn the skills, which really, they help you to be more efficient and be better at your job. And just keep looking out for the skills that are in demand in the job market, and keep yourself relevant.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
My faith. Absolutely. My faith in God is number one. It's my number one go-to, and I'm just full of gratitude and praise. And no matter what I go through, whether it's success or whether it's a lesson, all glory and praise goes to my God. Absolutely.
