Her Story

About Shay

Shay holds a Bachelor's of Fine Arts in Film editing and a certificate in broadcasting from the Ohio Center of Broadcasting. She is self-taught in online marketing and creating web pages through courses and self-education. She has a mentor named Lynn Mitchell, a set decorator in the film industry, who guided her practically beyond film school theory. Shay attributes her success to resilience, noting that it does not matter how many times you fall down but how many times you get back up. She values being honorable, following through with her word, and maintaining integrity rather than being a shyster. Her advice includes finding a mentor to shorten the learning curve and choosing the uncertain path by acting before feeling ready. She is inspired to build an ecosystem for women including transitional housing and a co-working space, using stages to share her message and reinvest in these goals.

Ten minutes with Shay

01What do you attribute your success to?

A quote comes to mind. It doesn't matter how many times you fall down, it matters how many times you get back up. So success is not a constant uptick, it's a lot of ups and downs, and I've definitely experienced that, but my willingness to get back up and go again is what gets me the success that I've experienced.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Find a mentor. That would be something that I have heard. It has been told to me, and when I do, it definitely shortens the learning curve and gets you into doors that you wouldn't otherwise have access to.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Move without knowing the certainty. A lot of people think that risk is doing something risky like skydiving or swimming with sharks or something. But I don't think it is. I think it's choosing the uncertain path over the certainty path. That's what you gotta do, you just have to go. If you want to get into this industry or any industry, it's just going before you feel ready, before you know it's gonna work. Just do it.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Being honorable, like following through with your word. Not being like a shyster, you know? Like one of those marketing bros. That falls underneath honor. Integrity.
