Ten minutes with Shay
01What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in my field has been overcoming barriers related to immigration, visa restrictions, and discrimination while building a career in academia and theater. Despite these obstacles, I have remained committed to creating inclusive spaces, such as launching a drag show that grew into a thriving student organization. These experiences have strengthened my passion for advocating for immigrants, women, and LGBTQ+ individuals, and I see a growing opportunity to foster more equitable and supportive environments where everyone has the chance to succeed.
02What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that matter most to me are education, compassion, inclusion, and service. Teaching has been my passion since childhood, and I am committed to empowering others through learning and mentorship. I also believe in giving back by supporting the LGBTQ+ community and animal welfare, and I strive to create spaces where people feel respected, valued, and empowered to thrive.
