Shayla Mayo
Shayla Mayo is a Regional Operations Manager in single-family rental (SFR) property management based in Florida, with over a decade of progressive experience across multifamily and SFR portfolios. She began her career in her early 20s in an assistant property management role in Palm Bay, where she quickly demonstrated operational capability while working through complex portfolio transitions, including renovation and tenant relocation environments. Her early success led to advancement into training-focused leadership roles, where she developed strengths in onboarding, team development, and operational standardization.
Over the course of her career, she has held leadership roles across multifamily housing and retail-adjacent brand management before transitioning fully into large-scale rental operations. She has built expertise in stabilizing and optimizing distributed real estate portfolios, improving key performance indicators such as occupancy, renewal conversion, and owner retention, while establishing structured operating rhythms across teams. Her experience also includes building SOP frameworks, strengthening reporting systems, and aligning cross-market teams around consistent execution standards.
She currently serves in operations leadership at HomeRiver Group, where she focuses on team management, portfolio performance, and data-driven operational improvement within large-scale SFR environments. She holds a Bachelor of Applied Science in Human Resources Management from Eastern Florida State College and is also a licensed real estate professional. Across her work, she emphasizes disciplined execution, clear communication, and a people-centered approach aimed at improving both resident experience and long-term portfolio performance.

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering my industry is to never give up and to fully leverage the skills you already have. Trust in your abilities and continue building on them through practice and learning. Every skill you develop is an asset, so apply them confidently and consistently, even when challenges arise. Persistence and self-belief will carry you further than you think.
What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in my field right now is simply getting in the door and being given an opportunity to prove yourself. Many capable individuals face barriers to entry, not because of a lack of talent, but because of limited access to opportunities or networks. However, this also presents a meaningful opportunity—once given a chance, there is significant room to demonstrate value, grow quickly, and make a lasting impact through dedication, skill, and consistency.
What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that are most important to me in both my work and personal life are kindness, empathy, and integrity. I strive to treat others with compassion and understanding, recognizing the importance of seeing situations from different perspectives. Integrity guides my decisions and actions, ensuring that I remain honest, accountable, and true to my principles in everything I do.
