About Sheeba

Sheeba Dawood serves as CEO of a mining startup based in Greensboro, North Carolina. With nearly six years in the mining industry, she transitioned into this leadership role following her PhD research in nanoscience, where she identified opportunities to apply advanced materials to transform mining operations. Originally from South India, Dawood pursued her undergraduate studies in North India, completed a master's degree in Australia, and conducted her doctoral work in nanoscience. She has navigated significant challenges, including stereotypes related to her gender, background as a researcher, and identity as a woman of color, relying on persistence and consistency to establish herself. In addition to her professional work, Dawood is building a church and serves as a pastor and counselor on Sundays, while enjoying hobbies such as hiking that continue to challenge and inspire her.

Ten minutes with Sheeba

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

My professor in Australia told me that successful people are not smart. Successful people are the ones who actually keep fighting. He said you have to ask and fight for resources and never give up. That advice changed me and I kept fighting through challenges.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Always be open to learning and opportunities. Do not limit yourself to one thing. Explore different segments in the field like speaking opportunities, conferences, manufacturing, or scientific roles. Step into areas and discover where you fit rather than letting others define what you can do.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Challenges include making spaces more considerate for women in mining and geology to grow and providing platforms for those without the same resilience. Opportunities exist but one should not stay comfortable; always take risks and challenge yourself to find more opportunities.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Honesty is my top value because if you're honest it makes things easier for anyone to move forward. Maintaining integrity in professional places is also very important.
