About Sheena

I originally started out with aspirations of becoming a doctor and went to college on a full-ride academic scholarship as a pre-med student, not knowing that wasn't actually a major. My advisor suggested I try the EMT course, saying even if I didn't decide to pursue it, when I was done it was just a semester and I'd be certified. I tried the EMT course, loved it, and decided to major in emergency medical services, got my license as a paramedic, and the rest is basically history. I've been with the Omaha Fire Department for 18 years and in public safety for over 25 years. I currently function as Assistant Fire Marshal, responsible for code enforcement and making sure that any new or existing occupancy meets the code requirements of the city. We look at life safety from a fire prevention standpoint, and I make decisions on whether or not the practices that contractors are trying to use when they are building new buildings are in alignment so that people can be safe whenever they're in those particular structures. My main area of expertise right now is leadership development and organizational leadership, specifically creating frameworks for how we best support the human resource. I'm the fourth Black female in the history of the Omaha Fire Department, and for a long time I was the only Black female. I'm also dually certified as a firefighter and a law enforcement officer.
