Her Story

About Shefali

Shefali Singh is a data and product analytics professional with a strong foundation in engineering, business intelligence, and product strategy. She specializes in transforming complex data into clear insights that support stronger business decisions, smarter workflows, and product-focused outcomes. With hands-on experience in Python, SQL, Power BI, ETL pipelines, and data modeling, she brings together technical precision, analytical thinking, and a growing passion for product strategy, user behavior, and cross-functional collaboration.

After earning her Bachelor of Engineering in Electronics and Telecommunications in India, Shefali began her career in 2020 as a Web Solutions Specialist. Supporting customers across domains, websites, hosting, and corporate email solutions, she built a strong foundation in technical problem-solving, client communication, and SaaS operations. That early experience became the starting point for her transition toward analytics, strategy, and product-focused work.

In 2021, Shefali joined Capgemini and transitioned into consulting, where she worked on ETL pipelines, reporting systems, dashboards, and data solutions that supported operational efficiency and improved data quality. This experience allowed her to connect her engineering background with real business challenges and build solutions that improved visibility, structure, and decision-making for teams.

Driven by a desire to grow beyond technical execution, Shefali moved to the United States in Fall 2023 to pursue her Master of Business and Science in Engineering Management at Rutgers University, a STEM-focused program that blends technical depth with business strategy. During her graduate journey, she continued expanding her skills across analytics, leadership, product thinking, and cross-functional collaboration.

In Fall 2024, Shefali received an internship offer from BMW of North America, initially planned as a three-month contract. Through her contributions to automation tools, dealer engagement, product analytics, and operational insight projects, the opportunity was extended until her graduation, a reflection of her ownership, adaptability, and ability to create value in a corporate environment.

Alongside her academic and corporate experiences, Shefali has contributed to Rutgers in multiple roles, including events coordination, program support, analytics, and stakeholder engagement, demonstrating her adaptability and commitment to growth. She is currently working part-time at Rutgers while actively seeking full-time opportunities in data analytics, product analysis, or junior product management. Her career is defined by continuous learning, resilience, and intentional transitions across engineering, consulting, and data-driven roles.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Shefali

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to resilience, adaptability, persistence, and the willingness to keep growing through change. My path has not been linear, but every transition has shaped me. Moving from engineering into tech, then consulting, analytics, and product-focused work, taught me that growth often comes from stepping into unfamiliar spaces before you feel completely ready. I have learned to approach change with curiosity instead of fear, and to see every challenge as an opportunity to build new skills, confidence, and perspective.

One of the biggest turning points in my life was moving to the United States in Fall 2023 to pursue my master’s degree at Rutgers University. I did it on my own, without family in the U.S., and that experience taught me independence, discipline, and inner strength in a way no classroom could. Balancing academics, work, internships, and personal responsibilities in a new country pushed me to become more resourceful and confident. It reminded me that success is not just about achievements on paper, but about the courage it takes to keep going when the path feels uncertain.

A major part of my success also comes from the support of my family, especially my brother, who has always encouraged me to think bigger, take bold steps, and not limit myself. Even from afar, his belief in me gave me the confidence to pursue opportunities that once felt intimidating and to keep building a career with purpose. To me, success is built through consistency, courage, faith, and the willingness to keep raising your hand, even when the path is not fully clear.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I have received is to stay ready for the room before you are invited into it. Opportunities do not always arrive when everything feels perfect, so preparation, consistency, and self-belief matter.

That advice has stayed with me throughout my career. Whether I was transitioning from technical support into consulting, moving to the United States for my master’s degree, or stepping into analytics and product-focused work, I learned that preparation builds confidence before the opportunity appears. You may not control when the right door opens, but you can control how ready you are when it does.

For me, that means continuing to learn, improving my technical and business skills, staying curious, and showing up with ownership in every role. The right opportunity can change your path, but the work you do before that moment is what helps you walk into it with confidence.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering technology, software, analytics, or product focused fields is simple: do not wait until you feel 100% ready. Growth happens when you raise your hand, take the opportunity, take the lead, and trust yourself to figure things out along the way.

I have learned that women often wait to move forward because they feel they need to be fully prepared, while many opportunities are designed to help you grow into them. When I look back, some of my biggest growth moments came from stepping into situations where I was still learning. You may feel like you only have 50% or 60% of the skills, but that does not mean you are not capable. It means you are entering a space where you can learn, build, and prove yourself.

You do not need to have all the answers before taking on a challenge. You need curiosity, consistency, and the courage to begin. Even if the path feels messy, learning on the job is part of the journey, and it is often where the most meaningful growth happens.

My advice is to trust yourself, be proactive, ask questions, keep learning, and do not let anyone’s doubts define your potential. Believe in yourself first, because confidence grows when you permit yourself to try.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Shefali believes women continue to face challenges in technology, engineering, analytics, and product, especially in spaces where representation is still growing. She has experienced moments of uncertainty, pressure, and self-doubt while navigating technical and leadership environments, but those moments have strengthened her confidence, resilience, and voice.

As a member of Rutgers Women in Product, she is part of a community dedicated to helping students, especially women, explore product careers through workshops, networking, mentorship, speaker events, and shared learning. Being involved in this organization has reinforced her belief that representation matters, and that women need access not only to opportunities, but also to guidance, community, and confidence.

She believes the industry is moving in the right direction as more organizations recognize the value of diverse perspectives, inclusive teams, and women who bring both technical depth and strategic thinking. For Shefali, the future of women in STEM and product depends on confidence, mentorship, education, and opportunity. She hopes to see more women step into rooms where they once felt they did not belong, trust their voice, and continue opening doors for the next generation.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Family is at the center of my life and remains one of my greatest sources of support and motivation. The values that matter most to me are family, resilience, integrity, accountability, and continuous growth. Family has always been my foundation, especially my brother, who has been one of my strongest mentors and sources of encouragement. He has always pushed me to think bigger, take bold steps, and not limit myself, even when the path felt uncertain.

Resilience is also central to who I am. I have moved through career pivots, the uncertainty of COVID, relocation to a new country, academic pressure, internships, part-time work, and moments where I had to rebuild confidence from the ground up. Each experience taught me that no honest work is small and every responsibility can shape your character. Even roles like events coordination or program support taught me discipline, humility, communication, and ownership.

I also deeply value education, perseverance, and the courage to step outside my comfort zone. Moving to the United States for my Master’s degree required financial, emotional, and personal commitment, but it reinforced my belief that growth comes from taking difficult steps with purpose. In both my work and personal life, I try to lead with honesty, keep learning, stay accountable, and trust that consistent effort creates meaningful progress.
