Her Story

About Sheila

Sheila Schroyer serves as General Manager at Pump and Pantry, a position she has held for two and a half years. With more than 20 years of experience in convenience store management, her career path includes earlier roles as a general manager at Casey's, regional training manager at Dollar General for four to five years, and multiple supervisory positions at Walmart including front-end supervisor, produce supervisor, lawn and garden supervisor, and customer service manager. Prior to these, she gained hands-on experience running family-owned restaurants, bakeries, pizza shops, bars, and a concession stand at fairs, as well as operating fishing boats. A high school graduate who entered the workforce directly, Schroyer credits her father with teaching her to give 110 percent effort in every job. She treats her staff and customers like family, leads by example through tasks such as cleaning bathrooms and taking out trash, and emphasizes listening, continuous learning, and moving past mistakes. She is a member of the Pennsylvania Order of the Eastern Star and her church.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Sheila

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to treating my staff and customers like family and always putting in 110% effort. My father taught us that when you have a job, you put on 110%, no matter what. I treat everyone as if they are the best part of my life, and I make sure every task is done before I leave. I clean bathrooms and take out trash myself to show my team I am willing to do any job.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I received was from my dad, who taught all of us children that when you have a job, you put on 110%, no matter what. I live by that, putting my whole being into work when at work and into home when at home.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice is to listen, strive to do your best, and always learn something new every single day. Learn from other people and from your own mistakes, but don't let mistakes hold you back. Move on and keep growing.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge is finding people who want to work for the right reasons and are willing to put in the effort, as many just take jobs because they need one. The biggest opportunity is the tremendous growth in the convenience store business, with companies promoting from within and young people able to move up quickly if they work hard.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

My faith in God is most important. My husband and I have faced hard times, but prayer has always helped us through, like when we needed money to move or fix a car. I pray every day on the way to work and thank God every evening for what He has done.
