Shelbi (Beeman) Brown, MBA, MHA, is a Claims Consultant at Marsh McLennan Agency, where she specializes in resolving complex and escalated insurance claims for members and employers across the country. In her role, she works on challenging cases that have often been denied or unresolved through multiple channels, helping clients understand their coverage, determine true financial responsibility, and reach lasting resolutions. Her work is driven by a commitment to reducing the financial burden of healthcare costs while ensuring transparency and education for those navigating the system.

Shelbi’s career began in pharmacy at just 15 years old through a competitive high school program with CVS Pharmacy, setting the foundation for a 17-year journey across pharmacy and healthcare services. She went on to hold roles with Sam's Club and spent over seven years with Saint Luke's Health System, where she played a pivotal role in patient care coordination. At Saint Luke’s, she developed and led a Meds-to-Beds program aimed at reducing hospital readmissions by ensuring patients could access and afford their medications at discharge—an initiative that reflected both her problem-solving skills and deep empathy for patients.

Balancing full-time work with her education, Shelbi earned both her MBA and Master of Health Administration from University of Phoenix, graduating with a 4.0 GPA and recognition through national leadership honor societies. Her professional philosophy centers on thoughtful problem-solving, advocacy, and education—empowering individuals to better understand the complexities of insurance and healthcare systems. Inspired by personal experiences and a desire to make a meaningful impact, Shelbi continues to be a strong advocate for patients and families navigating the financial realities of medical care.

Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to building strong, long-term relationships and learning from impactful mentors—especially Tony (Lawrence Wagner) at St. Luke’s—who helped shape my understanding of the field. Combined with persistence and personal motivation from seeing the financial burden of medical care on my own family, these experiences continue to drive my commitment to helping others navigate complex healthcare challenges.

Q

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I ever received came from my boss, who would always tell me to slow down. I was always fast and wanted to know everything right away, but he would say, 'Shelby, just slow down. You're gonna learn it. But just slow down,' because I wasn't going to learn it all in one day or one setting, and if I tried, I would miss the big picture. That advice has always stuck with me. Even in my current job, I want to help and fix and resolve so many things so quickly, but I'm constantly reminding myself to hold on and ask what's the bigger picture. How can I help this person or resolve this indefinitely, not just in this one singular moment? I feel like you can apply that to everything - your education, being in college, living life. It doesn't have to be done right that second. Just look at the bigger picture.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

The best career advice I’ve received is to “slow down”—to learn deliberately instead of trying to absorb everything at once, so I don’t miss the bigger picture.

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge in my field right now is that it's such a specialized, small niche. I work with about 300 clients across the entire country, which could be a total population of maybe 20,000 people, but there are millions of people out there. There is such a high demand for what we do, but it's a high demand that people aren't aware of. Employers aren't aware of it, or they outsource it and don't realize the benefit that we can help and service people on both sides - employers and members alike. Everything else is out there, like brokerages, but there's just not that educational piece that this is a thing. I wanted to start my own company and didn't even know this was a thing until I was really, really digging for it, and then I ended up coming in contact and made that connection. That's probably the biggest downfall - the lack of awareness about what we can do.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Time is definitely the most important value to me - personal time, independent, individualized time. I value it so much, and I didn't realize how much I took it for granted before. What I do now is remote, and I can't imagine how I got so many things done when I was working a true 9-to-5 job. By the time you get home with little ones, it's 8 o'clock and you haven't even sat down to deal with your own stuff, let alone your laundry, dishes, or whatever household jobs you have. I can't imagine going back. I don't think I could ever find a job better than what I have because I value that time so much. Especially with my kids being younger, I'm more involved with their school. My daughter Aubrey started kindergarten this year, and my son starts next year. I never would have been able to drop my kids off every day for school and pick them up. We would be paying financially through the roof for somebody else to take care of my kids. That flexibility means everything - when they're home sick, I don't have to worry about whether I have sick time or if I'm taking time off. It just comes natural with this job.
