Her Story

About Shelbie

I am the Director of Development for the Southeast Region at Hilton. I assist owners, developers, investors on converting existing assets or hotels into one of our 20-plus Hilton brands or assisting them with building a new Hilton property. I've been in real estate development for 6 years and with Hilton since 2018. I love to travel which aligns with working for a hospitality company, and in my free time I enjoy water skiing, water sports, snowboarding and skiing.

Ten minutes with Shelbie

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to always being open to learning, no matter what stage you're at within your career, learning from others, learning about different roles within your industry, always staying open-minded and hearing out different folks' perspectives really helps you grow.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Lean into your mentors, shadow as much as possible. Don't be afraid to lean into different areas, whether on the hospitality side or the finance side, to really drill in on what your interests are and where you thrive.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Continue to keep learning, lean on mentors, really get involved whether that's internships or clubs. There are so many opportunities to get yourself out there in front of executives. The hospitality industry is very welcoming. Never be intimidated. The finance business is definitely a world for women and there are more and more women entering and thriving there.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Interest rates and construction costs are at an all-time high. It's difficult to get projects under construction right now, but continuing to push the envelope and think of new creative ways to work with owners and investors, assisting with finding financing or connecting with general contractors, and being persistent.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Leaning into relationships and mentorships. Having a work-life balance, making time for family and friends, and building a community within your workspace so you feel at home when away from home so often.
