Ten minutes with Shelby
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute much of my success to the values and work ethic instilled in me from a young age. I was raised to understand the importance of hard work, accountability, and to always strive for better. I was taught to approach every opportunity with dedication, integrity, and a willingness to learn and grow. That mindset has stayed with me throughout my career and continues to drive my commitment to personal growth, leadership development, and continuous improvement both professionally and personally.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Stay accountable and valuable. One of the best pieces of advice I've ever received that's stuck with me throughout my professional journey. I have always strived to take ownership of my work while continuing to grow my skills and contribute in meaningful ways. Keeping this advice close to me has helped me steadily advance within an industry that I'm passionate about and to remain an asset to my company.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would encourage young women entering this industry to believe in their ability to lead, learn, and make an impact. Don't be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone or take on new challenges, because growth often comes from the opportunities that stretch you the most. Stay accountable, continue building your knowledge, and always look for ways to add value to your team and organization. I also believe it's important to stay open to learning from others while remaining confident in your own voice and perspective. This industry is constantly evolving, and having a mindset focused on growth can create incredible opportunities for advancement.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in the energy management field right now is keeping up with the rapid pace of change. Companies are having to navigate evolving regulations, tighter deadlines by utility companies, and the growing demand for accurate data and reporting. At the same time, businesses are being asked to improve efficiency while balancing costs, which adds stress to their daily operations - that results in higher expectations and increased standards from third party companies like our own. With that being said, there's also some incredible opportunities. Advancements in AI and data analytics are helping companies and their third-party management to make smarter decisions around energy usage and utility management. All organizations have to be more focused on innovation, process improvement, and operational efficiency, which creates opportunities for professionals who can adapt and provide solutions for these constant changes.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Integrity is one of the values that guides me in both my professional and personal life. I believe in being reliable, honest, and accountable, and I take pride in following through on my commitments. I also place a strong emphasis on continuous growth — not only in my own development, but in supporting and encouraging the growth of those around me. I enjoy finding ways to improve processes, expand my knowledge, and help others succeed professionally.
In addition, I value balance and purpose. It is important to me that the work I do has a meaningful impact, while also allowing me to maintain strong relationships with family, friends, and the people who are most important in my life.
