Her Interview
Ten minutes with Shelby
01What do you attribute your success to?
A big part of it is the women around me. A lot of my inspiration comes from my mom who had a very powerful career. My sister and I have always worked really hard to follow in her shoes. Being able to work hard for my family and have my son see that his mom works hard.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
There's a Maya Angelou quote that I love: people won't remember you for your title, or how much money you made, or how far up the ladder you got, they will remember how you made them feel. I hope that anyone who's ever worked with me will say that I made them feel respected and I was kind and thoughtful in every interaction.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
When you think about accepting a role, what are the key responsibilities that you're going to be carrying day in and day out? Things that you would want to grow in and continue to capitalize on. And then what type of culture do you want to be a part of? Define early on what's important to you, and those will change as the time continues.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
AI is on everyone's mind. It really helps keep the trains in motion but it doesn't inspire creativity the way that people do. In my industry, paid media is huge and we need digital experts who can figure out a media plan and a budget spend. In hospitality and retail, experiential is top of mind. People care about experiences.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Trust and fostering trust and integrity are very important. Hard work. Learning about who someone is and what inspires them and motivates them. Support on the hard days, like when I need to leave at 2 o'clock because daycare called with a fever.
