Her Interview
Ten minutes with Shelby
01What do you attribute your success to?
I would attribute my success to a servant leadership approach and a strong commitment to understanding the work and perspectives of every member of my team. I prioritize being accessible and supportive, ensuring that I am available to assist my team members even in areas outside of my direct expertise. When challenges arise, I focus on collaborating to find solutions together rather than working in isolation. I believe in fostering a team-oriented environment where openness, shared problem-solving, and mutual support are central to how we operate, and that mindset has been instrumental in my growth and the success I have achieved in my career.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
The best advice I would give to young women entering this industry is to focus on being kind, collaborative, and easy to work with. Kindness and professionalism go a long way in building strong relationships and earning trust across teams. It is also important to remain open, adaptable, and willing to learn, especially in healthcare IT where change is constant and challenges evolve quickly. Maintaining a positive attitude and approaching challenges with resilience both individually and as part of a team has been instrumental in my own career growth, and I have found that surrounding yourself with people who share that same mindset makes the work both more successful and more rewarding.
03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in my field right now is operating within a healthcare and economic environment that requires doing more with less. Organizations are under increasing financial pressure, which means we must be intentional about how we structure teams while working within tighter budgets and limited resources. At the same time, expectations for technology performance, system optimization, and user support continue to grow, requiring a more strategic approach to prioritization, resource allocation, and operational efficiency. While this creates challenges, it also presents an opportunity to rethink how teams are built and how work is delivered, with a stronger focus on streamlined processes, effective governance, and scalable solutions. It encourages innovation in how we leverage both technology and talent, ultimately helping to create more resilient, adaptable teams that can continue to deliver high-quality outcomes in a constrained environment.
04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that are most important to me in both my work and personal life are honesty, transparency, and strong communication. I believe in being open and straightforward in how I work with others, as it builds trust and strengthens collaboration across teams. Just as important to me is treating people with kindness and respect, which I see as a foundational principle in both leadership and everyday interactions. I have found that consistently demonstrating integrity and maintaining a genuine focus on being a good person goes a long way in building meaningful relationships and creating a positive impact in both professional and personal settings.
