Her Interview

Ten minutes with Shelby

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to the strong education I received from Utah State University, where I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Health Education and Community Health. My journey from pharmaceutical research and medical device sales to insurance risk management has allowed me to combine my expertise with my passion for helping others in the health and life sciences industry.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve received came from my mentor, Justin Burningham, who has guided and inspired me throughout my professional journey. His support and encouragement have helped me grow, stay focused, and pursue excellence in my career. I’m grateful for the opportunities and achievements that have followed, including receiving the Eagles Award Presidents Club recognition in 2025.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering this industry is to never give up, even when stepping into roles that may be male-dominated. Believe in your abilities, build strong networks, and support other women along the way. Finding mentors who can provide guidance, encouragement, and perspective is also essential for continued growth and success.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges and opportunities in my field is navigating a traditionally male-dominated industry. While it can present challenges, it also creates opportunities to bring new perspectives, build stronger connections, and empower more women to succeed. I believe continued collaboration, mentorship, and support among professionals will help drive positive change.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me are education, empowerment, and making a difference. I enjoy helping customers understand the importance of insurance while creating opportunities for women in leadership through The Women’s Executive Round Table. Outside of work, I value health, fitness through CrossFit, and quality time with my husband and three children.
