Her Interview

Ten minutes with Shenika

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to the unwavering support, encouragement, and example set by my mother and grandmother. Their strong work ethic taught me the value of perseverance, discipline, and personal responsibility from an early age. Watching my grandmother work multiple jobs despite limited educational opportunities inspired me to pursue excellence and never take opportunities for granted.

Their belief in my potential motivated me to become the first person in my family to achieve this level of higher education. They consistently reminded me that success is earned through hard work and determination, and those lessons continue to guide me both personally and professionally.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I have ever received came from my mother and grandmother: "The world doesn't owe you anything—you owe it to yourself."

As I progressed through my career, I came to fully appreciate the meaning of those words. They taught me to take ownership of my goals, work diligently for what I want, and never expect success to be handed to me. They also encouraged me to remain focused, persevere through challenges, and never give up on myself. Even when setbacks occur, the key is to get back up, keep moving forward, and stay committed to the vision you have for your future.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I encourage young women entering dentistry to invest in business, leadership, and professional development opportunities in addition to their clinical training. Pursuing advanced education, such as an Executive MBA or leadership-focused programs, can provide valuable knowledge that strengthens decision-making, practice management, and career growth.

Strong leadership is a skill that can be developed over time. By continually learning, improving communication skills, and understanding how to effectively lead teams and serve clients, you can create greater opportunities for success. Professionalism, adaptability, and a commitment to personal growth will help you stand out and make a meaningful impact in the profession.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the ongoing challenges is balancing the responsibilities of clinical practice, business ownership, family commitments, and personal well-being. Successfully managing these demands requires intentional prioritization, effective communication, and maintaining a healthy mindset.

At the same time, I see tremendous opportunities in dental consulting and mentorship. By combining my years of clinical experience with my business education, I hope to help newer dentists navigate practice ownership, leadership challenges, and long-term career success. Supporting the next generation of dental professionals is an exciting and meaningful opportunity within our field.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that guide me most are mindset, communication, prioritization, faith, and a strong work ethic. I believe success begins with maintaining a positive and disciplined mindset while staying focused on meaningful goals.

Clear and consistent communication is equally important, both professionally and personally. I strive to be transparent, manage expectations effectively, and ensure that the people around me feel informed and supported. I also place great importance on balancing professional responsibilities with family commitments, remaining grounded in my faith, and continuously working to become a better leader, professional, and person.
