Shereen Nasrullah: Being an influential woman means to have an impact in the environment around me and have a substantial effect to at least one other person's life in the contribution that I make.

What's one piece of advice you would give to younger women chasing their dreams?

Her Story

About Shereen

I'm an international student in Buffalo studying parasites in my lab, and I've just always been keen on diseases. As a kid, I always wondered how diseases happen. I used to want to treat people, especially if I saw someone sick. It was always something I was curious about, to know more about why they're like that. That's why I kind of chose this path over the conventional medical path of being a doctor. I want to contribute to actually fixing the root problem of how a disease is formed and how it can be eradicated completely. Right now, I'm working on African sleeping sickness, which is prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa. There's a lot of loss to the economy and a lot of loss to lives as well, so it's just something that's sad, and I want to fix such problems. I'm thinking of either doing a PhD after this, studying more into parasites, or I'm also thinking of working with hospitals and working with infectious diseases.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Shereen

01What do you attribute your success to?

I think recently, I really love depending on myself for everything. I've recently moved out of my parents' home, and I just love the feeling of giving to myself whatever I want. It's motivating to be independent and to be able to afford and do whatever I want to do.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say to try out your own abilities, and not go over what other people have experienced. Don't let others' experiences limit what you think you can do. Test your own capabilities and forge your own path.
