About Sherri
Sherri WhiteWilliamson serves as Executive Director of the environmental justice nonprofit she co-founded upon returning to her rural roots. Her career spans more than 20 years in environmental work, including roles in the political arena, prior nonprofits, and the federal government at the U.S. EPA, where she began focusing on environmental justice. She holds a zoology degree from Howard University, a master's degree in public policy from American University, and a law degree from Vermont Law with a focus on energy regulation and policy. These varied experiences have enabled her to develop innovative positions and lead efforts such as securing a 2024 consent decree and community benefit agreement with a local landfill that had operated for over 50 years. She also collaborates with Clean Air NZ on air quality projects and remains active in her church. WhiteWilliamson attributes her success to faith and a willingness to take chances, advice she now shares with students she teaches at Duke University each spring. She has been a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated for over 50 years.

A lot of faith and the willingness to take a chance even with some doubt. I believe everything happens for a reason, so take advantage of opportunities and turn them into the best they can be. There's a lesson to learn in everything, even when things don't turn out positive.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Don't be afraid to take a chance on anything, even if it's something you've never done before. It could open a door or opportunity that takes your career in a different direction or gives a different perspective.
