Sherry Smith

Sherry Smith is a veteran event coordinator, modeling coach, etiquette instructor, and founder of Designed Grace, with more than 42 years of experience in fashion, modeling, personal development, and event production. Born in Germany as an Army brat, her journey into modeling began remarkably early with her first professional photo shoot at just nine months old. After returning to the United States, she received formal training at Spears Charm School and quickly became involved in fashion events throughout Memphis before expanding her work to Atlanta, where she modeled and worked with Macy's in various locations. Throughout her career, Sherry has coordinated countless events while teaching modeling, poise, etiquette, and life skills, becoming a respected mentor within the fashion and beauty industry.

Inspired by her mother and a family legacy of educators, Sherry developed a passion for teaching confidence, presentation, and professionalism, particularly to young women who may not have been exposed to those opportunities. Her extensive experience working with major cosmetic brands, including MAC Cosmetics, along with her retail and fashion background, gave her expertise in cosmetics, skincare, styling, body types, and image presentation. Recognizing a lack of etiquette and modeling resources within many communities, especially within the African-American community, she became committed to sharing the lessons she learned about social etiquette, dining protocol, communication, and self-presentation. Through partnerships with respected Memphis boutiques and fashion leaders, Sherry has coordinated fashion shows, mentored aspiring and professional models, and taught runway techniques, poise, confidence, and professionalism. What began as FACES (Facilitating and Coordinating Events Successfully) eventually evolved into Designed Grace, where she continues to teach graciousness, finishing skills, and personal refinement through fashion events, mentorship programs, and community initiatives.

Despite facing tremendous personal and health challenges, including surviving four strokes and a heart attack shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic, Sherry’s dedication to serving others has never wavered. Her resilience has been strengthened by her faith, her family, and especially her son Bryce, who lives with cerebral palsy and continues to defy every medical expectation given at birth. As she approaches her 65th birthday, Sherry remains passionate about uplifting others physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Her long-term vision is to establish a full-scale event and training center that offers classes in poise, etiquette, charm, modeling, and professional development while bringing together accomplished women, including former pageant titleholders and industry leaders, to mentor future generations. Through Designed Grace, Sherry continues to advocate for higher standards, personal growth, confidence, and self-worth, encouraging individuals to invest not only in their appearance, but also in their character, education, and purpose.

Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my faith in God, who has sustained me and allowed me to recover and continue forward after serious health challenges. I also credit my mother, whose early instruction in manners, etiquette, and proper presentation laid the foundation for discipline, confidence, and professionalism in my life. In addition, I am grateful for the strong community partnerships I have built over the years, which have provided opportunities to grow, serve, and expand my impact. Above all, my resilience has carried me through personal and professional obstacles, allowing me to remain committed to my purpose of educating, mentoring, and empowering others.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering this industry is to invest in yourself both personally and professionally. Take time to develop your appearance, but equally prioritize your education, knowledge, and overall growth. Do your research, learn the history of the industry, and connect with individuals who are already established so you can gain real insight and guidance. Be intentional about listening, developing poise, and carrying yourself with confidence and presence in every setting. Most importantly, cultivate independence, build your own sense of worth, and avoid relying solely on opportunities to come to you—create value in yourself so you naturally stand out and open doors for your own success.

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenges in my field today include a decline in structured opportunities for etiquette training and social development, as well as a noticeable shift in standards within pageantry and personal presentation, which has reduced consistent expectations for poise and professionalism. At the same time, these challenges create important opportunities to rebuild and elevate the industry by establishing dedicated spaces for training and development. My vision includes creating a full-scale event center that offers daily instruction in etiquette, poise, modeling, and personal presentation, while also expanding classes and strengthening partnerships with pageant participants and boutique owners. Through these efforts, I see an opportunity to restore standards, broaden access to quality development, and positively impact how individuals prepare for both professional and social environments.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me in both my work and personal life are maintaining high standards, practicing graciousness and poise, and consistently investing in personal growth and the development of the mind. I believe in carrying myself and teaching others to carry themselves with confidence, dignity, and intention in every environment. Equally important to me are strong family bonds and a deep faith, which ground me, guide my decisions, and give me strength through life’s challenges. Together, these values shape not only how I live, but also how I serve, mentor, and pour into others.
