Her Story

About Shilpa

Shilpa Matlock brings over twenty years of experience in accounting and finance to her current role in commercial real estate investment sales, which she began in 2024 after leaving the corporate world. In her previous positions, she worked in a variety of roles, most recently as a controller and earlier as an accounting manager. Today, her main area of expertise is commercial real estate, where a typical day involves calling potential clients, driving to meetings, visiting properties, putting together deals, and researching the market. She is inspired by her parents' achievements and hard work, describing her education as the School of Hard Knocks rather than formal academic experience. Shilpa is a member of Minnesota Commercial Real Estate Women (MNCREW) and Wired Up, a group for women in real estate investment and development. She has volunteered with Dress for Success by delivering an informational session and participates in Toastmasters. She attributes her success to her drive and the desire to be the best version of herself, along with the grit to keep doing the work until it works on her and then for her. Among the advice she offers is to get out there and talk to as many owners as possible, as that is where the real education and opportunity lies in commercial real estate. She notes that entering this brand new profession has involved a long, slow climb that has been both rewarding and challenging.

Do the work until it actually works on you and then for you. Things take time. Have the grit to keep going.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Get out there and talk to as many owners as possible because that's where the real education and opportunity lies.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

This is a brand new profession for me and it's a really long slow climb so it's been a really rewarding but challenging year behind me and it'll continue to be that way for the first couple years I'm sure.
