About Shinese

Shinese Brathwaite brings over a decade of sales expertise to her leadership role in healthcare sales, where she oversees representatives and builds partnerships to increase visibility for health insurance access. After studying criminal justice in college without pursuing that path, she transitioned through retail sales management into healthcare, later returning to complete her master's degree while balancing work and family responsibilities. Based in New York, New York, she prioritizes educating clients about the complexities of health insurance influenced by policies and politics, rather than traditional selling, and draws personal fulfillment from empowering individuals in both her professional and personal life.

Ten minutes with Shinese

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

My mom said keep going. A long time ago somebody told me to play the game but I am still trying to figure that out. Love what you do and you never work a day in your life.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Come in with the mindset that you really want to be in this role. Sales is a good role to be in and it could be profitable. Network but be authentic about how you network. Don't be intimidated by people and don't let people try to intimidate you. If you are powerful, if you know your worth, if you know what you're talking about, don't second-guess yourself, say it. Just show up as you, authentically.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

A lot of people are being cut off of their health insurance. There's a lot of misinformation and false facts. The pool has become smaller while people who need health insurance have been cut off. Subsidies have been taken away. Still trying to educate people but it's challenging watching individuals you want to help but can't because it's so tight now.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I am a helper by nature. I value being able to help individuals and empower individuals. It gives me some kind of fulfillment. I carry that through my personal life as well. It's my nature, helping people, being able to give to people in that kind of way is something that makes me feel good.
