About Shirley

Dr. Shirley Knox Benton is a trailblazing educator, motivational speaker, author, consultant, and inventor whose life and career have been defined by perseverance, faith, and a steadfast belief that “with God, all things are possible.” A native of Longview, Texas, Shirley overcame tremendous adversity after losing both of her parents at the age of eight. Raised by relatives who instilled strong values of education, discipline, faith, and determination, she developed the “can-do” mindset that would later inspire thousands of students and educators throughout her distinguished career. Her inspiring philosophy is reflected in her book, In Class…With Class…It Can Be Done, where she shares her convictions about education, leadership, and empowering young people to believe in themselves and pursue success despite life’s obstacles.
With more than 50 years of experience in public education, Dr. Benton has served as a classroom teacher, academic counselor, assistant principal, principal, and educational consultant. She earned degrees and certifications from institutions including Texas Woman’s University, Huston-Tillotson University, Harvard University, and Indiana University Northwest. As the first African-American female principal of Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, she gained national recognition for transforming a troubled school into a model of achievement, earning Reader’s Digest’s American Hero in Education Award and being named Texas High School Principal of the Year in 2001. Her groundbreaking accomplishments and commitment to educational excellence have made her a respected mentor, speaker, and advocate for students, teachers, and school leaders across the country.
Beyond education, Dr. Benton is also an entrepreneur and inventor. She created the P-Puff™, an innovative product designed to provide dignity and comfort for immobile individuals requiring personal care assistance. Her invention earned an Award of Merit at the INPEX Invention and New Product Exposition and led her to participate in the Steve Harvey School of Business Acceleration. A devoted member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church for more than five decades, Dr. Benton continues to inspire others through speaking engagements, mentorship, consulting, and community involvement. Widowed from her late husband Sammie L. Benton, she remains deeply proud of her family, her thousands of former students, and the legacy she continues to build through faith, leadership, and service.
