About Shirley

Shirley Sorrels serves as Provider Engagement Account Manager, a position she has held for nearly four years. With 11 years of experience in the healthcare industry, she began her career at Humana before moving to Optum, part of UnitedHealthcare. In her role, Sorrels guides providers on correct billing practices and closing care gaps while advocating for the specific needs of rural health communities in Kentucky, including access to specialists, community outreach, and resources. She maintains relationships with provider groups, billing managers, and office staff to ensure quality care and financial stability for practices. Sorrels earned her Master's in Healthcare Administration from the University of Louisville in December and is currently pursuing a Master's in Business Administration, which she expects to complete in 2027. She is a member of the Healthcare Financial Management Association, the Healthcare Administration Executive group, SEAT, and Dress for Success. Outside her professional work, Sorrels advocates for autism resources and neurodivergent support within JCPS schools. She attributes her success to the unwavering support of her husband and the guidance of mentors and providers who provide valuable feedback.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Shirley

01What do you attribute your success to?

My husband has been the person that pushes me 100%. He knows me better than I know myself and encourages me to finish my degree and go further. Mentors in organizations and providers give feedback and ideas that push me forward.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Learn as much as you can. Dig in deeper, do the research. Always look 5 steps ahead because healthcare is constantly evolving. Learn every role that touches what you do because knowledge is power. Network and always dress to impress.

03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

God is number one, of course. Family. Integrity. Just being truthful, even if the truth hurts sometimes. Being able to ask those hard questions that everybody's afraid to ask.
