Her Story

About Shriya

I started my career with Deloitte in the Mumbai office right after I completed my CA (Chartered Accountancy from India). I worked there for about two to two and a half years in the valuations and modeling group. While with the Indian firm, I was sent to Calgary for an international mobility assignment in December 2017 to June 2018, which was uncommon for someone within their first year. I came back for a year, then moved as a full-time employee with Deloitte in Canada, working with the same team I had seconded with. I was part of valuations and modeling and got an opportunity to work with some of the biggest energy clients, which is where I specialized my skills in that sector. I worked there for about 5 years, moving up from a senior associate to a senior manager. Then I made the move to Houston for mostly personal reasons and professional growth. The Canada winter was harsh on me, and I have some family in-state. Houston being the hub for energy, I wanted to work with the Houston office and on their energy clients. I'm part of the valuations and modeling group, where we provide business valuation and related advisory to clients, primarily in the energy space, though we operate as a national practice. The nature of the service is primarily being able to provide valuation of businesses or intangible assets. I also act as one of the leaders for my team here in Houston. They wanted someone with my expertise from the Canadian firm and my management and leadership skills to manage and teach the growing team of professionals.

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I've received is to do a good job, and things will figure out themselves. I know it's a very simple one, but I have worked hard without worrying about politics or discrimination, and I have been presented with opportunities to rise and been appreciated for it. I've never felt like I was being discriminated against because of my gender or my race. If you're good at your job, if you take it seriously, and you give your 100% to it and do it diligently, none of those other factors should discriminate against you. That's been my personal experience, and I live by that. My motto has been to do good work, have a learning attitude, do your job well, and also ask for things. If you want something out of your career, you need to ask for it. You cannot just sit tight and assume that things would come to you. If I've ever wanted something in my career, whether I want to move to Canada or move to States, or I want to serve any particular client, or work with a certain person, or even promotions, I've asked for it, I've shown the ability and potential, I've worked hard for it, and I've got it.
