Her Story

About Shruti

I began my journey as a software engineer after completing my computer science engineering degree in India, where I was selected on campus for an organization in Pune, Maharashtra. This opportunity led me to move to the United States, where I've worked with several FANG organizations over more than 12 years. At Meta, I served as a capacity and planning engineer, which is where I made my pivot from software engineering into AI and data engineering. Meta gave me the opportunity to work on the latest technologies and tech stack, and one of my proudest moments was being part of the team driving capacity and planning to reduce costs and optimize ROI for Meta's warehouses. I then joined Intuit in their payments division, working on the MailChimp product for email marketing and campaigns, using AI recommendation technology to target customers for nurturing campaigns and bringing platforms closer to people. In my current role at Shift 4, which focuses on payment systems for restaurants, I work on the data engineering platform using Foundry, Palantir. I work in AI recommendation systems, targeting our merchants to make their payment journey smoother and helping leadership take smart AI-driven decisions to target more customers to our platform. Looking ahead, I see myself growing as a leader in AI and data engineering, driving teams and evolving into a technical architect role, working on high-tech stack and bringing AI much closer to our technical work teams, onboarding developers onto cloud, AI, and Grok to make coding much easier.

Ten minutes with Shruti

01What do you attribute your success to?

I would like to acknowledge the way I've been raised and how academics were part of our day-to-day life, as well as ourselves being involved in extracurricular activities. That gave me tremendous confidence and helped me evolve to the person I am right now. I also attribute my success to my family, particularly the support of my spouse. Without his support, it's hard to find time for yourself, especially in the United States where you don't get much help. Both of us nurture the time we have to grow ourselves and to build each other. We're both in technology, so my spouse understands the challenges even better, like what it takes to contribute to the work. The tremendous support from his end has been crucial to my success.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

If you think your previous knowledge is of no use because technology is evolving every single day, don't give up. Just give yourself some time and work on your skills, keep yourself up to date with the latest technology, and then sky's the limit. When I moved to the United States, I did not have previous work experience here, and I had all my master's and degree in a different country outside, not here. Still, I did not give up. I did some data camps, reached out on that front, and that helped me come back into technology with the newer tech stack. I took some break because I was having kids and it was a different country altogether, but I followed organizations like Women in Tech and got inspiration from there, which helped me drive my goals and come back into my career again. That's definitely an inspiration - when you feel that there are no doors open for you, you can still find hope.

03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I think my creative and distinctive feeling is important, and I have this unique way of presenting stuff and taking ownership of what I come in. I create milestones from time to time, take achievements, share these stories, create posts out of it, and make sure that I am accountable for the work I've been assigned to. That's the key quality I have - commitment and taking ownership.
