Ten minutes with Sierra
01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
I think staying open. Sometimes I think, like, with opportunities, we can get really close-minded, but if we're staying open to any possibility of how we can create a different growth path for ourselves. Even if it's being open to, you know, a career pivot. We're taught that, you know, sometimes things have to be black and white, but we live in a world where anything can really be possible nowadays, so being open to creating whatever path feels right for you. I think also find your heart. Every time I made that decision, whether it be about leaving a job or following what feels right to be in the next role, it's always been hard to kind of imagine when I'm listening to my personal or in my mind.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I think have fun. Being in the retail world, it can be kind of very predominantly masculine-dominated. And we tend to fall into the habit or the energy of being really, like, masculine-forward energies and putting a lot of pressure on ourselves, working really hard and pushing ourselves, and those are all things that are important, but I think leading from a feminine way. We need more of that in this type of industry as well.
03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Right now with my current company, there is a lot of opportunity. I think there's just people are constantly evolving with technology, and my company specifically right now is in an evolution of building an e-commerce business, so I've been kind of outside of the buying role, managing that and stepping into creating the growth in that area. Some challenges, though, as the world is evolving, we must evolve with it, so one of those things is AI. And I think that brings up a lot of uncertainty for people in terms of what their employment can look like, and it also brings uncertainty for people as they're thinking about how does that affect our environment and the land that we live on.
04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
My balance is a big one for me, being able to just create events with myself, but feeling burnout or drowning in the work. Other four values, being in a company that creates sustainable efforts and has the concern for our environment and for nature, that's something that really makes so we value. I think just caring for the people. It's hard work for a company that doesn't support people, or provide the safety and energy to support them. So that's something that's probably really big for me as well, making sure that the people are being supported and appreciated.
