Silvia Barbosa is a seasoned Environmental Engineer with more than 15 years of experience specializing in water resources management, environmental compliance, water and wastewater infrastructure, utility operations, and regulatory affairs. She currently serves as a Senior Environmental Engineer at Embasa, where she supports large-scale public utility operations and environmental initiatives serving communities across Bahia. Her responsibilities include conducting environmental audits, monitoring regional water and sanitary sewage services, coordinating regulatory matters, developing municipal sanitation plans, and advancing initiatives focused on sustainable and resilient water infrastructure. She is also actively involved in engineering and environmental committees, contributing her expertise to initiatives that promote safe drinking water and responsible water-resource management.

Throughout her career, Barbosa has built extensive expertise in environmental licensing, water quality, contamination prevention, regulatory compliance, and utility governance. Her professional background includes roles with engineering, environmental consulting, and mining organizations, where she supported environmental impact studies, licensing processes, water management programs, and projects involving the São Francisco River Basin. 01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my passion for environmental engineering and my belief that access to safe, reliable water is essential to every community. Throughout my career, I have remained committed to using my knowledge and experience to develop solutions that improve environmental sustainability and quality of life. Earning my U.S. permanent residency has been a particularly meaningful milestone, opening the door to new professional opportunities and broadening my global perspective. At the same time, my pursuit of a PhD in Geography continues to strengthen my expertise in water governance and environmental systems. I encourage aspiring women engineers to trust themselves, recognize the value of their knowledge and experience, and have the confidence to use their expertise to create meaningful and lasting change.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering the environmental engineering and water resources industry is to believe in yourself and trust in your knowledge, skills, and capabilities. You will encounter people who may doubt your abilities or discourage you, but it is important not to let their opinions define your potential. Stay focused on your goals, continue developing your expertise, and remain confident in the value you bring to your profession. Self-belief, perseverance, and a commitment to continuous learning will help you overcome challenges, pursue opportunities, and build a successful and meaningful career.
