Her Story
About Simara
I'm currently a student at Columbia College Chicago, graduating in 2 weeks with my bachelor's in communications. During my time here, I've worked in multiple roles including at the Columbia Chronicle on the socials desk and as a digital media manager for our School of Communications. I'm also involved in a couple organizations. I originally started my college career as a communications student, and while being here, I've done a lot of marketing work without even knowing it, just through the organizations I've been a part of and the jobs I've had. In January, I went to New York for a class where we toured Google and YouTube. That's where I learned that marketing is definitely my career path. I was able to talk to an alumni who currently works at YouTube doing marketing, and I talked to the VP of Marketing at YouTube. They solidified my decision to go with marketing, and now I'm getting my master's in marketing after school.

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I've received was definitely to network. That's one thing I've been told these last 4 years being in school. But also, if you have a dream, follow it. Don't get stuck somewhere that you never really wanted to be.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Be open to every single opportunity. I wouldn't even know about anything going on at Google or YouTube had I not just decided to take a fashion course, even though I had not really any interest in fashion or retail. But I still took the course and ended up having what my dream career is, so be open to everything, every opportunity that comes your way.
03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values most important to me in my work and personal life are definitely honesty, communication, and loyalty.
