Her Story

About Simran

I've been working in product design since 2018, and I currently serve as a Senior Product Designer at Chase, where I've been since October 2023. I work on the car loans team, and I'm really proud of how we've grown this segment of the business during my time here. My work involves iterative design processes, where I'm typically working in Figma, wireframing and prototyping. I work very closely with business stakeholders to understand what the business needs, and then tie that to what users need from our application. I create interfaces and interaction patterns that best meet those goals and get the best of both worlds. Often these things are hypotheses, and we'll be testing them in the real world through A-B testing or taking it to users to validate our assumptions and learn more about what works best for them. Throughout my career, I've worked across different industries including telecom, advertising, and technology, as well as on a social card game for teenagers. I've been on different types of teams, from scrappy to more well-established, which has been really interesting. Outside of the corporate world, I'm co-founder and design lead on a game company that's very focused on social impact, influencing mindset without it ever feeling preachy, just creating fun experiences that change how teenagers see things like social skills. I'm passionate about design that helps change mindsets and positive behaviors, and I'm looking to continue in growth design moving forward.

Ten minutes with Simran

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to being willing to take action and iterate, to try things and not be afraid to fail. I believe in continuing to iterate when things don't work or when you learn more about what you actually need to do. I'm very open to being wrong, and I think that willingness to be wrong and learn from it has been key to my growth and achievements in this field.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say the top advice is to be curious and open-minded. Really enjoy getting to learn who your users are. Try to have a reasoning behind every design detail, no matter how small it is. Just be really intentional and thoughtful in your work. Every detail matters, and understanding the why behind your design decisions will make you a stronger designer.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

I think one of the biggest challenges is that product design still seems like kind of an up-and-coming field, so sometimes a part of the job really becomes sharing what product design is and how it adds value to the business. It's about communicating that it's not just making things pretty, but it's very integral to business strategy. I've been on diverse teams from scrappy to more well-established, and that challenge of educating others about the value of design has always been there, regardless of the team structure.
