Her Story

About Simran

I moved to the United States in 2019 from India, where I had completed my bachelor's in English literature. After arriving here, I earned my MS in Global Strategic Communication from Loyola University, and then pursued my MBA because I wanted to go into management and project management, which is exactly what I'm doing now. I've also completed certifications in Lean Six Sigma, project management, and organizational leadership. Before my current role, I worked as a communication specialist with Loyola Medicine at the Strich School of Medicine in their admissions department, and I've also worked as a content manager. Now I'm working at a startup urgent care and vein clinic founded by three doctors - two MDs and a finance person. As the only non-doctor managing the operations, I handle everything from HR to office management, project management, billing and RCM, insurance claims and denials, pre-authorization processes, marketing, community engagement, and managing 25-30 employees. I work with 10-15 different platforms daily, including various EHR systems and practice management systems. What I love most about this role is that I get to wear multiple hats and take on projects from scratch, implementing and executing them until completion. We're very focused on community engagement, hosting free screenings and events, visiting senior living facilities, and bringing awareness about vein insufficiency to the Naperville area. I'm passionate about making healthcare accessible and providing the best quality patient care, which is reflected in our Google reviews.

Ten minutes with Simran

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to being passionate about my work and working hard. There's no shortcut to success, and when you give it your all with full dedication and with your kind of skill, there's no one who can stop you from growing in your field. I also believe in being very result-oriented - there are so many distractions along the way, but instead of just going about in circles, I keep my focus and keep going towards my goal. I don't try to procrastinate - I work on things the same day or within the next two days. And I couldn't have done any of this without the mentorship I received along my journey from people like Daryl Neighbors, the Dean of Admissions at Stritch School of Medicine, Dr. Smith Apatio who is one of the owners where I work now, and Dr. from Science of Spirituality who has a similar background as mine. I can fall back on them for anything I need at any point, and they've been great support.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say be passionate about your work and work hard. There's no shortcut to success, and when you give it your all with full dedication and with your kind of skill, there's no one who can stop you from growing in your field. Be result-oriented - there are so many distractions along the way, but instead of just going about in circles, keep that focus and keep going towards your goal.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

There are challenges on a daily basis. Talent is everywhere, so there's always competition around. We've had to overcome challenges like switching to a new billing team when our previous one wasn't great, and we had to set up everything again to make sure we get paid for all the services and deal with insurance and those things. You derail and then you come back on the track - that keeps going on. Dealing with people has been a challenge too. We try not to come across as just money-making - we see people for free, and if someone walks in our door, we don't want them to go out just like that. We'll see them and treat them, and they can pay us whatever amount they want to because it's about reaching out to people. Managing employees and making everyone on the same page has been a challenge. Communication has been a challenge, as well as marketing it the way you want to, dealing with people on a daily basis, and managing different projects at the same time. Time management has been a challenge, and I overcome that every day by not procrastinating and trying to work on things the same day or within the next two days.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Creating the brand and gaining the trust of people is the most important thing to me. Everything else will follow once people understand your brand. When one person joins in and connects with you, you're going to get five more people - that's how it works. So focusing on branding and beginning with trust is most important, and then the money and business will follow. I'm also very passionate about meditation and relaxation, which has been a huge part of my life and helps me stay focused. As a vegan-vegetarian myself, I really promote that lifestyle and am deeply involved with organizations that align with those values.
