About Sirena

My journey in international logistics began in 2010 when I decided to take up international business in college. During my four years at Hofstra University, I took an import-export course and found it really interesting. As I was getting close to graduating, I reached out to my career center and told them my interests and what I wanted to do, asking if they could help me find an internship within that field. I was able to get an internship at Shapiro, where I started working in customs brokerage, assisting them with the customs clearance documents. From there, I was able to get a job at a freight forwarder called J.F. Hillebrand, which is now called Hillebrand Gory. I've always worked in logistics and international shipping. At my previous company, I started off as a logistics coordinator and then became team lead. Then my current company, Midea America Corp, reached out to me on LinkedIn. I went for an interview, and they hired me. I came over as a specialist and then worked my way up to assistant manager, manager, and now senior manager for international logistics. I've been in this role for a little bit over a year now. Today, I oversee all of the international shipments for the company from Southeast Asia to the U.S., including the transportation, customs clearance, and drayage management and procurement. I oversee all shipments, whether they're going to our own 3PL warehouses or directly to our customers, and I have a team of inbound, customs, and a carrier management and procurement specialist.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I would say overall, I've been able to stay driven and focused and been able to prove myself over the course of my career. I'm proud of how I've been able to properly show my capabilities and the value that I can bring, resulting in me being promoted to where I am today. There wasn't one individual or specific moment that I'm proud of more than the other, but every step that brought me to where I am today, I'm proud of. I've worked my way up from specialist to assistant manager, manager, and now senior manager, and I'm proud of how I've worked my way up to where I am today.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say to work hard and don’t get discouraged. You can accomplish whatever you want to accomplish if you really put your mind to it. Take every hurdle as a challenge and try to overcome that challenge. If you make mistakes always try to learn from those mistakes.

03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

My family is my life. I have a little boy who's 2 years old, and another one on the way. I love traveling and spending time with my family. In my work, I really enjoy solving problems, and collaborating with other people to resolve issues. Everyday brings new challenges. I work with great people and for a great company, and that's what I really enjoy. I also think networking is really important, and building relationships is key to success.
