Her Story

About S k.

I have been with the city government for 2.5 years as a digital media coordinator. I handle everything that comes from the Office of Public Health and Safety and goes out to the public in digital media format, including presentations, flyers, social media posts, collaborations, and events. I started as an intern with the mayor's office and they created a position for me without an interview. I have a Bachelor of Sciences in Cybersecurity and in Criminal Justice and Public Safety from Indiana University, and I'm currently in my MPA Master's program specializing in counterterrorism. I plan to attend law school in the future. My work involves ensuring accurate information reaches the public while matching city branding.

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Know when to hold and know when to fold. There are a lot of decisions you're going to be very passionate about, especially in a government agency. Know when to fight a battle all the way through and know when it's not that big of a deal and just go with the flow.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Don't wait until you think you're ready, just go for it. Apply for the internship, run for the leadership position regardless of whether you think you're qualified. Speak up during the meeting and share your ideas. Confidence grows through action, not before it. Don't compare your journey to somebody else's because everybody has a different timeline.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge is lack of communication and clarity about what the communications team is supposed to oversee. People often fail to communicate with us, leading to media inquiries about programs we know nothing about. There's a constant cycle with new hires and lack of onboarding, especially in public health and safety information.
