Her Story

About Skyla

Skyla Cornell has spent the past 3 years building her career in real estate. She obtained her real estate license and initially worked in residential real estate before transitioning into the commercial sector 2 years ago. She draws inspiration from her mother, who has over 20 years of experience in the industry, as well as from her mentor, Corey McKinney, who has 10 to 15 years in the field. Skyla is currently enrolled at Sierra College, where she is studying business administration and expects to receive her associate's degree in December. In her role, she spends her days cold calling potential clients, sending emails, attending networking events, and working on her first solo deal involving a lease for a children's dance studio. She is an active participant in several women's business groups in Sacramento focused on commercial real estate and construction development. Skyla attributes her success to determination and perseverance, values that have helped her navigate a competitive industry where she has faced challenges related to her age and gender. She advises aspiring professionals, particularly young women, to obtain their real estate license, seek a trusted mentor, build relationships across the industry, and connect with like-minded individuals. Her core values include discipline, kindness, grit, and honesty.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Don't give up. Or, if you get 100 no's, you're bound to get 1 yes.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Get your real estate license, find somebody who you trust, a mentor above all is the best tool you can have. Make sure they are the right one and not just taking the first offer you see. Create relationships within the industry whether male or female and find like-minded people.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The industry is very competitive with many experienced men in big companies, making it challenging to get clients as a young person. However, many long-time professionals are retiring, creating opportunities for young people to enter and find mentors.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Discipline, kindness, grit, and honesty.
