Her Story

About Sofia

I'm currently a college student at Southern Methodist University with almost 4 years of experience pursuing law and politics. I've always been really interested in advocacy and public work, and I've always really had a drawing towards the law and towards justice. I've always really wanted to get into politics, so I thought that pursuing law would be a really great way to get into that. I'm looking into pursuing constitutional law so I can get into government. My main area of expertise right now is American politics, and I'd really like to get into state-level politics, either in Texas or my home state of New Mexico. My typical day involves going to class from 11 to 4, then doing homework and studying pretty much the rest of the night. I'm on the executive board of the Women in Law Club as secretary, which is a huge organization on campus with over 200 members. I'm on the ethics board at SMU, which is really selective and very competitive, but they definitely have a huge impact around campus. I'm in the legal honor society, a different legal honors society, and a classical studies honor society. I'm currently interning under Environment America doing environmental advocacy, and I'm going to be interning under a judge this fall. I'm also trying to work for a congressmember this summer. Getting on the ethics board is probably my biggest accomplishment so far because it's really selective and competitive. I also sing opera and have performed at Carnegie Hall, which I'd say is a pretty significant accomplishment in my life. I have all of my Microsoft certifications including Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I've ever received is more just an efficiency thing. It's like, if something takes 5 minutes or less to do, you should just do it, get it done, get your task done. Don't procrastinate.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would want to inspire other women to get out there and pursue strong academic challenges, and to pursue challenging careers in law and politics, and very male-dominated career fields. I think if I could give anything to influential women, I would want to influence other women to get a move on to work hard. I've really liked to see strong women in politics and women in law, which has been extremely influential to me. People that influence me are Jasmine Crockett and Melanie Stansbury. I really like to see just women active in politics, which has really gotten the spark going and has encouraged me to go up there and do it.
