Sonia Alfaro is a Senior In-House Employment Counsel and Litigation Strategy leader based in Houston, Texas, with 26 years of experience in the legal industry spanning private practice, entrepreneurship, and corporate leadership. She began her career at a private law firm in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where she practiced commercial law, employment law, products liability, maritime law, and contract law. From the outset, she developed a strong foundation in complex litigation and advisory work, building a reputation for delivering practical, results-oriented legal counsel across a broad range of industries and legal matters.

Following her early career in private practice, Sonia founded her own law firm, which she successfully grew into a multi-attorney practice. During this 12-year period, she continued her work in commercial, employment, products liability, and contract law, while also leading innovative workplace practices, including offering flexible work arrangements for female attorneys—an approach that supported retention and professional development at a time when such models were less common. In addition to her legal practice, she served as lead counsel on high-volume litigation matters, managed teams of attorneys and staff, and oversaw all phases of case strategy from inception through resolution.

In her current role, which she has held for nearly a decade, Sonia serves as Managing Partner for the Houston office and leads the employment law practice within a global organization. She represents high-stakes clients in complex employment matters while also advising internal stakeholders on workforce risk, compliance, and litigation strategy. She manages and mentors multiple attorneys and legal professionals, exercises supervisory authority over employees, and partners closely with business leadership to align legal strategy with operational goals. Known for her steady leadership and business-focused approach, she is trusted to navigate complex legal challenges while strengthening organizational performance and decision-making.

Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to the journey and experiences that have shaped my 26-year career in the legal field. I began at a private law firm in San Juan, Puerto Rico, practicing commercial, employment, products liability, maritime law, and contracts, which built a strong foundation in complex legal work. I later opened my own firm, where I led and grew a multi-attorney practice for 12 years, before transitioning into my current role as Managing Partner for the Houston office’s employment law practice, where I represent high-stakes clients in complex employment matters and oversee and mentor multiple attorneys. A key part of my success also comes from my passion for mentorship, especially supporting young professionals and women in developing confidence and skills such as salary negotiation, ensuring they are empowered to advocate for themselves and grow in their careers.

Q

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve ever received is that it is possible to build a successful career while also making a meaningful difference in the lives of others. That perspective has guided me throughout my professional journey and shaped how I approach both leadership and service. I strive to balance strong performance with mentorship and support for others, particularly young professionals entering the field. This commitment has been especially meaningful to me and is reflected in recognitions I have been honored to receive, including the 2019 Service and Quality Award, the 2023 FHRM Leadership Award, and the 2024 AWLA Mentoring Award.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering the legal field is that you can absolutely achieve great success in this profession, and your perspective and contributions are both valuable and needed. I am very passionate about supporting other women as they grow in their careers, and I believe strongly in the importance of paying it forward. Throughout my own journey, I have seen how mentorship, encouragement, and shared opportunity can make a meaningful difference, and I am committed to helping create pathways for other women to thrive, lead, and succeed in this industry.

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

In my role, one of the greatest opportunities in the legal field is the ability to make a meaningful and lasting impact on both the clients I serve and the next generation of women I mentor. I value the responsibility of guiding organizations through complex employment matters in a way that supports sound decision-making, minimizes risk, and strengthens workplace culture. At the same time, I am deeply committed to mentoring young women entering the profession, helping them build confidence, develop their skills, and navigate their careers with intention. Being able to combine high-level legal work with the opportunity to positively influence others is both a privilege and one of the most rewarding aspects of my career.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that are most important to me in both my work and personal life center on mentorship, integrity, and balance. Professionally, I am deeply passionate about mentoring young female professionals, particularly those just beginning their careers, and helping them understand how to build confidence, develop their skills, and achieve long-term success. I consider this commitment to paying it forward one of my most meaningful professional contributions. In my personal life, I value staying grounded and maintaining balance, and I enjoy spending time outdoors and playing pickleball, which allows me to recharge, stay active, and bring energy and perspective back into my work.
