Her Story
About Sonji
I have been in construction management for about 25 years, focusing primarily on federally funded projects, especially schools. I have worked on disaster recovery efforts rebuilding and renovating schools after hurricanes in New Orleans and now in St. Croix, as well as schools in California using bond money. I also handle some infrastructure and streets projects, but schools and federally funded work are my niche. I work remotely from my office in New Orleans for projects in the St. Croix region.

Ten minutes with Sonji
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to trying to get along with everyone in a genuine way, learning other people's roles and perspectives, and building relationships across all levels of a project. For example, knowing how the custodian or gardener works helps coordinate details like designing a gate for their lawnmower. This understanding allows better coordination and makes you a more effective leader.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Don't doubt yourself in your intelligence or your knowledge. Just stick it out and endure because it's a hard but really good field. People who are smart, organized, and like to see the end result will succeed. Hang in there even when you don't feel like it's for you or for a woman in general.
