Her Interview
Ten minutes with Sophia
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to both my parents' sacrifices and my personal discipline. My parents overcame significant challenges and created opportunities that allowed me to pursue higher education, research, and community involvement. Their resilience inspires me daily. In addition, my strong work ethic, commitment to continuous learning, and dedication to pursuing meaningful goals have enabled me to maximize those opportunities and achieve personal and academic success.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I encourage young women to seek mentors and role models who reflect the path they aspire to follow. Historical pioneers such as Katherine Johnson and Amanda Gorman have demonstrated the power of perseverance, excellence, and leadership. I believe it is important to pursue passion-driven goals, remain confident in your abilities, and never place limitations on what you can achieve. By surrounding yourself with strong mentors and staying committed to your purpose, you can create meaningful impact in your field and community.
03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the greatest challenges in medicine is maintaining meaningful physician-patient relationships within a healthcare system that often requires providers to see a high volume of patients each day. These demands can limit opportunities for deeper connection, empathy, and individualized care. At the same time, medicine offers tremendous opportunities through unprecedented access to education, research, technology, and innovation. Advanced medical tools, educational resources, and emerging technologies provide aspiring healthcare professionals with greater opportunities than ever before to improve patient outcomes and advance healthcare equity.
04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values most important to me are impact, equity, outreach, discipline, education, and community service. I strive to use my knowledge and experiences to create meaningful change, particularly for underserved populations. I believe in promoting equitable access to healthcare, investing in community empowerment, maintaining a strong work ethic, and continuously learning so that I can better serve others through medicine and advocacy.
